Dinner Conversation

The assignment was to write a scene where two people are talking past one another. I thought immediately of my family. My family gatherings consist of lots of talking but little conversation. Reason being, conversation requires listening and most everyone in my family prefers to talk, regardless of who else is talking, who else is listening, how loud the television is playing, how much the kids are whining, what presents are being opened or how much food is in your mouth. You get the idea. I haven't quite figured out how it all goes down, but here's a first attempt...

My God I’m full. What was that. A 24-lb turkey? Jesus.

Do you want any more sweet potatoes? I’m just going to throw them away. What a sin.

What time’s that Miami/Dallas game on?

Nobody even touched the cranberries. I don’t know why I bother.

I think it starts at 3. Let me see that TV guide. You didn’t need that ham. The turkey and raviolis were plenty. I don’t know why you made that ham.

Should I put the coffee on or wait?

Game starts at 3. What time is it now? That Elway’s got some arm. He’s getting a $Mil a game. You should see him throw.

I think this pie needs to be heated up. I’ve never heard of raspberry pie.

I’m so full I can’t even get up. I need a glass of water.

I’m going to make the coffee now.

Maybe it was the raviolis. They were kind of heavy.

Do people still drink decaf? I’m going to make two pots.

The Giant’s are on next week. Now that’s going to be a game. Can you put some ice in this water? Just a little. That’s it.

Should I put out both cheesecakes?

Those ravs. Were they from Carmine’s? That place is the best. I can’t stop thinking about those raviolis.

Linda brought cookies and brownies too. I don’t know about that pie.

You have any more of those raviolis left?

I’m going to leave all these dishes for later. I’ll just do them when everyone leaves.

How about some of that Carmine’s bread? That bread was great.

It’s such a mess. Maybe I should do some of these dishes now.

Maybe just a little plate, just a couple of raviolis.

That was much more of your father's family than what goes down at my house, I think. SO how could it be Thanksgiving then or is that your poetic license? I never heard of or saw a raspberry pie either and anything pasta -like at my house is home made not store bought, so I guess you just condensed two families into one.
OK it was good.
